Happy Apple Pie DayThursday, May 13, 2010 — Do you know what May 13th celebrates? Well, for some, it starts the countdown to Memorial Day and the beginning of summer. For others, it's the special day that honors their absolute favorite food: apple pie!
Apple pie is the official state pie of Vermont, but it's a much-loved dessert all over America and can be made and enjoyed in a variety of ways. You can craft an apple-pie crust out of crumbled buttery crackers, adding slices of hot apples with sugar and cinnamon on top. But you can also enjoy a slice of apple pie with a slice of American cheese! Or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or with a tall, cold glass of milk.
Any way you slice it, today is an excuse to enjoy some apple pie. And don't forget that you can get your very own window with an apple-pie cooling on its ledge, which is sure to make a lovely addition to your home!
Snacking is an easy way to get more foods from the different foods groups. Try topping a slice of apple with cheese or peanut butter or adding peanut butter and raisins on celery.
